ANTONIO BURRIS
"I lived here at my grandmom's almost about five
years. My grandma had the kitchen door widened, the stair
climber so I can go upstairs, the ramp so I can go outside,
she had the bathroom fixed so I can get in there and the
back door widened. Before we got the lift, my grandmom
had to ask the neighbors to take me outside. All the modifications
make it easier for me to do things around the house. I
feel better that I can do things myself." |

Antonio was a 15
year-old young man who, as a result of a tragic accident,
was confined to a wheel chair.
He had lived with his grandmother
for nearly five years and she had several major modifications
made to her home so that Antonio could have greater independence.
“Before I got the lift [on the
outside of the house], my grandmom had to ask the neighbors
to take me outside,” explained Antonio. “My life
would be harder, if we didn’t have everything done to
this house.”
“I feel better today. I can
do things myself.”
Cynthia Caldwell,
with Adaptive Living Solutions, explained “There could
be a full range of modifications, depending on what the client’s
needs are.” The range includes minor, inexpensive modifications
such as installing grab bars or some touch lights to more
extensive modifications such as installing ramps or stair
glides.
In Antonio’s case, his grandmother
had the exterior lift installed (on the front stairs of the
house) enabling him to enter and leave the front door; the
stair glide (inside the house) so that he could move from
between the floors; and an exterior ramp off the back deck
allowing him to enter and exit the back door.
“These modifications increased
his mobility,” explained Cynthia, “and his independence
in his home.”
Note:
Antonio Burris recently passed away from complications due
to his medical condition. Those involved in the creation
of the "No Place Like Home" home modification video
are deeply saddened by his loss and would like to express
their sympathy to his family and their gratitude for Antonio's
participation in the video.
